Mechanical chronographs paying tribute to the Datsun 240Z rally car
In 1969, Seiko wrote a major new chapter in its history with the launch of the Speedtimer, the world’s first automatic chronograph to feature both a vertical clutch and a column wheel. That same year, the Datsun 240Z took the motorsport world by storm, with seiko being its sponsor. To celebrate that dual legacy, Seiko has introduced two mechanical chronographs for this year, the Prospex Speedtimer SRQ055 and the limited-edition SRQ057. While both models share the same mechanical engine, they present distinct aesthetics, one classic, the other modern.
Each reference features a 42mm stainless steel case with a thickness of 14.6mm. The SRQ057 stands out with a full black hard coating, including a black crown and pushers, giving it a contemporary motorsport edge. In contrast, the SRQ055 sports a brushed and polished silver-tone finish for a more traditional look. Both watches are fitted with dual-curved sapphire crystals with inner anti-reflective coating and offer 100 meters of water resistance, secured by screw-down casebacks. Notably, the SRQ057’s caseback is engraved with a Datsun rally logo.
The SRQ055 features a matte black dial with a clean, legible layout. The tachymeter scale has been moved to a fixed external bezel, creating a more balanced and open dial. The chronograph counters are arranged with a 30-minute register at 9 o’clock, a 12-hour counter at 6, and a small seconds subdial at 3. Silver-toned markers and hands, coated with LumiBrite, and a date window is placed between 4 and 5 o’clock.
The SRQ057, on the other hand, showcases a black dial with vintage-style cursive ‘Datsun’ branding, red chronograph hands, and a blue-accented running seconds hand. Its tachymeter bezel, also external, features a bold red-and-white scale that reinforces the sporty character.
Both chronographs are powered by the in-house Seiko Calibre 8R48, an automatic movement beating at 28,800 vph (4Hz). It incorporates both a column wheel and vertical clutch for smooth, precise chronograph operation, and delivers a 45-hour power reserve.
The SRQ055 is delivered on a newly designed stainless steel bracelet with refined multi-links and a three-fold clasp with push-button release. Meanwhile, the SRQ057 comes fitted with a black calfskin leather strap, inspired by vintage rally straps, secured by a stainless steel folding clasp and accented with red stitching to match the dial’s racing cues.
The SRQ055 joins the permanent collection at a retail price of EUR 2,800 (approximately AED 11,750), while the SRQ057 is limited to just 500 pieces and priced at EUR 3,500 (around AED 14,700). Both models will be available starting September 2025.
