TAG Heuer and Porsche: Precision Meets Automotive Excellence
TAG Heuer and Porsche, two brands with storied histories, have released a new timepiece: the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronosprint x Porsche. This release celebrates the 60th anniversaries of both the TAG Heuer Carrera collection and Porsche's 911, which was initially christened as the 901.
Interestingly, the 901 had its name altered due to a trademark hiccup with Peugeot, which owned rights to car names comprising three digits with a zero in the center. This naming snafu didn't deter Porsche; the 911 went on to become an iconic sports car, captivating enthusiasts with its 0-100 km/h dash in a mere 9.1 seconds.

Deriving inspiration from the Glassbox, the new Chronosprint x Porsche comes housed in a slightly larger 42mm diameter case, with a thickness of 14.9mm. Its Carrera style is evident in its piston pushers and faceted lugs. The watch's 100m water-resistant case sports brushed flanks and polished top surfaces, while the domed sapphire crystal becomes a significant attraction, given the watch's minimal bezel.
The relocation of the date window, which was previously at 12 o'clock on the Glassbox Chronograph, now subtly sits within the running seconds at 6 o’clock.

Within this watch is the industry's novel TH20-08 movement, a reinterpreted in-house caliber TH20 that premiered at the 2023 Watches & Wonders fair. Crafted for accurate measurements of short intervals, the movement’s mechanism aptly mirrors the Porsche 901’s swift acceleration. Two snail-shaped wheels, built using the cutting-edge LiGA process from the MEMS industry, provide the central hand's decelerating motion.

The watches, available in steel and gold, reflect their automotive inspiration through details such as the red lines on the flange, reminiscent of the 911's acceleration. Drawing design cues from the 1970s Porsche dashboard, the red section of the 9 o'clock subdial highlights sportscar heritage. It signifies a critical engine limit, symbolized by TAG Heuer's choice of 6.8 hours, equivalent to 6800 RPM. Moreover, the watch's hands resemble a car dashboard, reinforcing the automotive design theme.
An innovative feature, the "glassbox" – a nod to the 1970s' domed hesalite crystal designs – adds charm and functionality. The caseback uniquely mimics Porsche's iconic three-spoke steering wheel. Completing the ensemble, the watches come with calfskin leather straps, each embossed with the legendary number "911", while their presentation is accentuated by co-branded TAG Heuer x Porsche packaging.
