Introducing The New Kurono Vermilion Chronograph ‘SHU:朱’

A bold Vermilion hue inspired by traditional Japanese torii gates

Founded by independent Japanese watchmaker Hajime Asaoka, Kurono Tokyo has earned a dedicated following for its thoughtful design, artisanal approach, and remarkable attention to finishing. Since its inception, the brand has focused on producing mechanical watches in small batches, blending traditional Japanese aesthetics with contemporary watchmaking techniques.

With its latest release, the brand introduces the Kurono Vermilion Chronograph ‘SHU:朱’, expanding its chronograph line with a bold colour inspired by traditional Japanese vermilion. The vivid orange-red hue used on the dial symbolises power and purification and is historically associated with torii gates, urushi lacquerware, and samurai armour. To ensure lasting vibrancy, prototype dials were subjected to extensive UV light exposure tests during development, with Kurono selecting only one pigment, true vermilion, that could withstand the harsh conditions without fading.

The watch is housed in a high-polished 316L stainless-steel case measuring 38 mm in diameter. It maintains an elegant profile at 13.50 mm thick, adopting the slim Mk.2 chronograph architecture that gives the watch a refined wrist presence. A solid metal caseback protects the movement and ensures a water resistance of 30 metres, appropriate for daily wear.

The dial features a vivid vermilion orange-red base paired with black chronograph sub-counters for strong legibility. A clean layout displays the hours, minutes, small seconds, and chronograph functions with polished hands.

Inside the watch is the Seiko NE86, an automatic movement that operates at a frequency of 28,800 vph (4 Hz) and offers a power reserve of 45 hours. The watch is fitted with a black calfskin leather strap and is offered as a limited production release available exclusively in person at the Kurono salons in Tokyo (Aoyama) and Shanghai, starting from 22 August 2025.

The price is JPY 598,950 at the Aoyama Salon and RMB 29,300 at the Shanghai Salon (approximately AED 15,000).
