The German brand returns with the classic design and functions of its iconic pilot's watch
Hanhart has long been a symbol of German watchmaking. Since its founding in 1882, the brand has made its mark in aviation timekeeping, most notably with the 417 chronograph, the first pilot’s watch delivered to the newly formed German armed forces in the 1950s. In 2020, this historic model was re-released as the 417 ES with modern updates. Like many reissued classics, it has since been expanded through various iterations. This year, Hanhart continues that legacy with the 417 ES Heritage Flyback.
The new model comes in two sizes: the familiar 39mm and a bolder 42mm, both measure 13.3mm in thickness, and are crafted from stainless steel with brushed and polished surfaces. The case maintains the robust yet wearable profile expected of a tool watch. Each version features a bidirectional fluted bezel with a red marker and a box-style sapphire crystal.
The case features a red pusher, a high-visibility color originally intended to prevent pilots from unintentionally resetting the stopwatch, a crucial safeguard for flyback chronographs. This red pusher served a functional safety purpose, and in this watch it’s crafted from HyCeram, a hybrid ceramic-polymer compound. Water resistance is rated at 100 meters, making it versatile for everyday wear. The 39mm variant includes a solid steel caseback, while the 42mm version offers a sapphire crystal caseback that reveals the movement within.
The matte black dial echoes the look of the original 417, with Arabic numerals coated in Super-LumiNova for excellent low-light visibility. The chronograph’s counters are symmetrically placed: a 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock and small seconds at 9 o’clock, topped by the historic Hanhart logo, and white syringe-style hands.
Powering the watch is the hand-wound Sellita AMT5100 M, a modern column-wheel chronograph movement with a flyback function. It operates at a frequency of 28,800 vph (4Hz) and offers a power reserve of 58 hours.
The 417 ES Heritage Flyback is available on leather straps in black, dark brown, or light brown, with or without a bund-style underlay, nodding to its aviation heritage. A three-link stainless steel bracelet is also offered. This watch joins the permanent collection and is priced at EUR 2,590 / AED 9,193 on leather, and EUR 2,790 / AED 9,903 on the stainless steel bracelet.
