Introducing The New Glashütte Original Seventies ‘X’ Chronograph

Known for its deep roots in traditional German watchmaking and its dedication to in-house craftsmanship, Glashütte Original has consistently bridged heritage with contemporary design. The brand is based in the town of Glashütte, Germany’s historical center for horology since the 19th century. Among its standout collections, the Seventies Chronograph serves as a modern tribute to the stylistic and cultural revolution of the 1970s, offering a distinctive TV-shaped case and integrated bracelet that set it apart from mainstream luxury sports watches.

This year, the brand is celebrating the tenth anniversary of the Seventies Chronograph line by introducing its first-ever North America exclusive, the Seventies ‘X’ Chronograph. This limited-edition release captures the retro soul of the 1970s, drawing inspiration from American muscle cars to vintage stereo systems, with a refined panda-style dial.

The watch features a stainless steel case shaped like a vintage television screen, a signature design element of the Seventies. It measures 40mm in diameter, 14.1mm in thickness, and 46.4mm lug-to-lug. Crafted with alternating brushed and polished surfaces that accentuate its angular architecture, it also includes protective crown guards to enhance durability. Thanks to a screw-down crown and sapphire crystals on both the front and back, the watch offers a solid water resistance of 100 meters.

The dial is lacquered white with black galvanised sub-dials, embracing the classic panda dial aesthetic that rose to prominence in the 1960s and '70s. The 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock includes a red ‘10’ marker, a subtle nod to the collection’s tenth anniversary. At 9 o’clock, the small seconds counter discreetly integrates a power reserve indicator, while a curved 12-hour totaliser sits at 12 o’clock. Completing the balanced dial is the brand’s signature Large Date window at 6 o’clock. Blackened dauphine-style hour and minute hands filled with white Super-LumiNova ensure visibility in low light, while the central chronograph seconds hand in bright red injects a burst of vintage sportiness.

Inside ticks the in-house Calibre 37-02, an automatic flyback chronograph movement built around an integrated column-wheel system. Beating at a frequency of 28,800 vph (4 Hz), it delivers an impressive 70-hour power reserve. 

The watch comes with two strap options. The first is a stainless steel bracelet composed of three links, with polished center links that add contrast and refinement. It also includes a fine-adjustment system for a precise fit. The second is a supple black rubber strap equipped with a folding clasp for a sportier look. The watch is limited to 100 pieces, priced at USD 17,900 (approximately AED 65,750) and is available through authorised retailers across North America.
