Celebrating 50 Years of Jaws with a Dial Inspired by the Film’s Iconic Poster
Seiko commemorates the 50th anniversary of the iconic film Jaws with the release of the Prospex SRPL81, a limited-edition timepiece that pays direct homage to the cinematic classic. Jaws, which redefined the summer blockbuster and instilled a lasting fascination and fear of the ocean, is celebrated here through a design that translates its most memorable visual cues into a bold and functional dive watch.
Released in the summer of 1975, Steven Spielberg’s Jaws became a cultural phenomenon. The film’s legendary poster, featuring a massive great white shark ascending toward an unsuspecting swimmer, became one of the most enduring images in pop culture. This powerful and universally recognized artwork forms the creative foundation of the Seiko Prospex SRPL81.
The watch features Seiko’s iconic Turtle case, known for its cushion-shaped silhouette and ergonomic comfort. Crafted in stainless steel, the case measures 45.0 mm in diameter. Thanks to a relatively short lug-to-lug distance of 47.7 mm, the watch wears more compactly than its dimensions suggest. With a thickness of 13.2 mm, the SRPL81 maintains a substantial yet balanced profile. The case is finished with a mix of brushed and polished surfaces, adding visual depth and refinement.
Positioned at 4 o’clock, the screw-down crown is a hallmark of the Turtle design. Its offset placement enhances comfort by preventing it from pressing into the wrist, especially during extended wear. This thoughtful positioning is as practical as it is iconic.
The unidirectional rotating bezel is made of stainless steel and fitted with a ceramic insert in a deep blue hue. The first 20 minutes on the 60-minute scale are marked in a lighter shade of blue, offering enhanced readability for short interval timing. This subtle detail complements the oceanic theme of the watch and adds functional versatility.
The caseback is solid and screw-down, offering water resistance to 200 meters. As a limited edition, the caseback is engraved with the words "LIMITED EDITION," along with the Seiko Prospex wave logo, a silhouette of the fishing boat Orca, and the shark’s dorsal fin, further tying the piece to the spirit of the film.
The dial draws directly from the original Jaws poster. The lower portion features a rich, deep blue that fades gradually toward the top, creating an ocean-like gradient. Rising from the depths is the unmistakable silhouette of a shark’s dorsal fin, rendered in silver-gray. This striking image is the visual centerpiece of the watch, making it instantly recognizable and emotionally resonant.
Legibility is a key feature, as expected from a professional dive watch. The large hour markers, filled with luminescent material, are a mix of circular and rectangular shapes, with a shield-like marker at 12 o’clock for orientation. The hands are classic Seiko diver style, broad, purposeful, and generously treated with LumiBrite. A clever detail is the seconds hand, whose counterbalance is shaped like a shark fin. The day and date display at 3 o’clock is framed and magnified for better readability.
Inside the SRPL81 is the Seiko Caliber 4R36 automatic movement, a reliable and proven engine within Seiko’s mid-range lineup. It operates at 21,600 vibrations per hour and provides a power reserve of approximately 41 hours. The movement features both hacking and manual winding functions, ensuring precision and convenience.
The watch is fitted with a dark blue silicone strap that complements the dial and bezel perfectly. Scheduled for release in July 2025, the Seiko Prospex Jaws 50th Anniversary SRPL81 will be limited to 5,000 pieces worldwide. It will be available exclusively in Japan, the United States, Australia, and Taiwan. The price is set at USD 795, which is approximately AED 2,920.
This commemorative edition blends cinematic heritage with Seiko’s robust dive watch legacy, offering collectors a unique and memorable piece that captures the thrill of the deep.
