Introducing Breitling Unveils the Superocean Automatic 42 Sylt Edition
Welcome to the hub of the horoloy
A new titanium watch that revives the spirit of the German brand’s earliest designs
Porsche Design turns back the clock to 1975, shining a spotlight on a lesser-known chapter in its horological legacy: the uncoated variant of its iconic Chronograph 1. With the introduction of the new Chronograph 1 – 1975 Limited Edition, the brand breathes new life into this rare piece of watchmaking history, merging minimalist aesthetics with the signature design DNA that defined its early innovations.
While the original 1972 Chronograph 1 made headlines as the first wristwatch to feature a matte black PVD-coated case, Porsche Design quietly introduced a stainless steel version in 1975. This variant offered a more industrial, clean-cut look—stripped of coating, yet rich in character. The new 2025 limited edition draws direct inspiration from that uncoated model, now reimagined with a modern twist: a case and bracelet crafted entirely from glass bead-blasted titanium.
Measuring 40.8mm in diameter, the Chronograph 1 – 1975 Limited Edition retains the instantly recognizable silhouette of its predecessor. The matte-blasted titanium case lends the vintage design a sharper, more contemporary presence while still capturing the utilitarian essence of 1970s German design. With hooded lugs, a sloping bezel, and unchamfered case flanks, the watch deliberately leans into its retro roots. Notably, this marks the first time this bare titanium case has been made available to non-Porsche vehicle owners. The case is water-resistant to 100 meters and features an engraved solid caseback denoting its limited edition status.
The matte black dial remains faithful to the original Chronograph 1’s design ethos, prioritizing high-contrast legibility and functional minimalism. Crisp white hands and markers ensure clear readability, while the red central chronograph seconds hand adds a dynamic accent. A bilingual day-date display at 3 o’clock (English and German) nods to Porsche Design’s heritage.
Surrounding the dial is a tachymeter scale, with the chronograph subdials arranged in a vertical tricompax layout: 30-minute counter at 12 o’clock, small seconds at 9 o’clock, and 12-hour counter at 6 o’clock.
Inside, the watch is powered by Porsche Design’s in-house automatic Caliber WERK 01.240. This COSC-certified chronograph movement features a flyback function, operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz), and offers a power reserve of approximately 48 hours.
Completing the package is a rounded H-link bracelet in case-matching matte-blasted titanium, secured with a micro-adjustable folding clasp for a comfortable and precise fit.
The Porsche Design Chronograph 1 – 1975 Limited Edition is limited to just 350 pieces worldwide. It is priced at USD 9,650 (approximately AED 35,450) and will be available exclusively through Porsche Design’s new U.S. retail partner, Watches of Switzerland.
