A Rare Stainless Steel Case Marks a Fitting Tribute to a Remarkable Calibre
Greubel Forsey unveils the final edition of the Balancier Contemporain, marking a definitive end to this iconic calibre. Encased in rare stainless steel, the new edition will be produced and delivered exclusively in 2025. After that, the Balancier Contemporain calibre will be permanently retired, closing a significant chapter in the brand's history.
Originally launched in 2019, the Balancier Contemporain was developed in response to the larger proportions of Greubel Forsey’s earlier masterpieces, exquisite but often too bulky for many wrists. With a round case measuring just under 40 mm, it was celebrated as one of the most wearable timepieces in the brand’s lineup.
While the smallest watch ever created by the brand is the Nano Foudroyante EWT, introduced in Abu Dhabi at the end of last year with a 37.9 mm diameter, the Balancier Contemporain remains the most compact of the non-complication models. Measuring 39.6 mm in diameter and 12.25 mm in height, it maintains a sleek profile with all the aesthetic finesse expected from Greubel Forsey.
This stainless steel case revives the brand’s traditional design language, a style first seen over two decades ago and somewhat set aside in recent sportier collections. The case is curved to follow the wrist and is fitted with domed sapphire crystals on both the front and back, offering a water resistance of 30 meters.
The openworked dial is executed in a multi-layered construction, with gold bridges and plates treated to various finishes and textures. A sunburst blue hour ring at 3 o’clock provides a vivid contrast against the deep blue accents across the dial. At 6 o’clock, a 12.6 mm in-house balance wheel hovers above a flat, black-polished gold plate, creating visual depth and dynamic reflections. A small seconds sub-dial sits at 8 o’clock, while the power reserve indicator at 11 o’clock is set against a polished grey scale. All hands are crafted from polished stainless steel for enhanced legibility and refinement.
The manually wound movement is equipped with a stop-seconds mechanism for precise time setting. Its large in-house balance wheel oscillates at 3 Hz, powered by two barrels offering a 72-hour power reserve. Composed of 256 hand-finished components, the movement features blue-treated German silver bridges, hand-frosted and spotted, with flat black-polished steel surfaces. Jewels are set in gold chatons with polished countersinks, reinforcing the brand’s commitment to traditional craftsmanship.
The caseback reveals a black-polished white gold plate, laser-engraved with text, alongside three visible jewels set in gold chatons. A secondary gold plate is engraved with the individual limited edition number.
Paired with a blue rubber strap matching the dial’s hue, the watch is secured by a stainless steel pin buckle engraved with the GF logo. This final edition is limited to just 33 pieces, each priced at CHF 220,000, equivalent to approximately AED 1,021,500.
