Commemorating the 20th anniversary of the iconic Spring Drive caliber
Grand Seiko was founded in 1960 as part of the Seiko Group, and in 2017, it officially separated from the Seiko Group to become independent and chart a new path toward innovation. The brand integrates traditional craftsmanship with modern technology, exemplified by the introduction of Spring Drive in 1999. This innovative movement combines mechanical and quartz elements to offer exceptional accuracy, Grand Seiko introduced Spring Drive to its collection in 2004, and this year marks the 20th anniversary of the 9R Spring Drive movement. To celebrate, the brand is releasing the Karasawa SBGY035, a special edition watch. This new model reflects both Grand Seiko’s technical advancements and its commitment to refined design.
The watch features a designed stainless steel case with a diameter of 38.5mm and a lug-to-lug length of 43.7mm. It is topped with a dual-domed sapphire crystal, enhancing both clarity and durability. With a thickness of 10.2mm, the case offers a well-balanced profile for comfortable wear. Additionally, the watch is water-resistant to 30 meters, combining practicality with its refined design. The Zaratsu-polished surfaces and satin-finished sides underscore Grand Seiko’s commitment to detailed craftsmanship.
Turning our attention to the dial, it features a deep red hue with a fumé gradient that deepens towards the edges. Its texture, characterized by seemingly random engraved lines in an erratic pattern, draws inspiration from, reflecting natural rock textures. This design evokes the 'Morning Glow of Hotaka Peaks,' capturing the imagery of the sun's red glow against the mountainside. The gold-colored seconds hand and GS logo accentuate the autumnal theme, while the applied Indices throughout the dial ensure clear time reference. Finely printed minute Indices around the periphery aid time reading, maintaining a clean and balanced look.
The Grand Seiko Elegance Karasawa SBGY035 is powered by the in-house Calibre 9R31, a manual-winding Spring Drive movement. This advanced mechanism combines traditional mainspring technology with a advanced regulator, offering the tactile sensation of a mechanical watch alongside a high accuracy , achieving ±1 second per day or ±15 seconds per month. The Calibre 9R31 features an innovative dual-spring barrel, housing two mainsprings stacked in parallel, which provides a 72-hour power reserve. Operating at a frequency of 32,768 vph (4.55 Hz).
