Introducing The New Seiko Presage Classic Series SPB499 with Urushi Lacquer Dial

Seiko has played a transformative role in the world of watchmaking. From pioneering the quartz revolution in the 1960s to becoming a beacon of affordable mechanical craftsmanship, the brand has consistently balanced innovation with respect for tradition. One of the clearest examples of this duality is the Presage collection, a line dedicated to showcasing Japan’s cultural heritage through artisanal dials and refined designs.

The Presage Classic Series, in particular, explores traditional Japanese aesthetics via enamel, porcelain, guilloché, and now once again, the age-old Urushi lacquer technique. The latest release, reference SPB499, adds a new chapter to this legacy with a craft that dates back thousands of years.

The watch comes in a 40.2mm stainless steel case, protected by a super-hard coating to enhance durability. At 12.1mm thick, it maintains a sleek profile, though some may wish for slightly more compact dimensions. A dual-curved sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating improves legibility, while the sapphire caseback offers a view of the rotor inside. The case is water-resistant to 100 meters.

What sets the SPB499 apart is its dial: a jet-black surface crafted using traditional Urushi lacquer, a painstaking technique involving layers of natural resin and repeated polishing. The result is a deep, glossy finish that’s nearly impossible to replicate with synthetic methods. The dial also features gold Roman numerals and a railroad minute track, along with grained gold leaf hands and a 24-hour sub-dial at 6 o’clock. The entire layout draws inspiration from Seiko’s vintage “Timekeeper” pocket watch, grounding it in historical context.

Powering the watch is the calibre 6R5H, a modern automatic movement that beats at a frequency of 21,600 vph (3 Hz) and delivers a solid 72-hour power reserve. The watch is paired with a black leather strap, stitched in beige for subtle contrast. A three-fold steel clasp with push-button release ensures secure and convenient wear.

This model will join the permanent collection and will be available in July 2025, priced at EUR 1,750, approximately AED 7,500.
