Unique Colors and Materials and New Complication Enter the Carrera Collection
The TAG Heuer Carrera collection, introduced in 1963 by Jack Heuer, was originally conceived as a chronograph for professional drivers known for its clean design, readability, and mechanical precision. Named after the high-risk Carrera Panamericana road race, the collection became a foundational pillar in the brand’s identity, embodying a balance of sport and sophistication. Over the decades, the Carrera has evolved through various mechanical innovations, including in-house chronographs, tourbillons, and more recently, contemporary reinterpretations like the Glassbox series.
At the 2025 edition of Geneva Watch Days, TAG Heuer presented a notable shift in the Carrera’s design language with the unveiling of the “Carrera Astronomer”, a new moonphase-focused model that departs from the traditional motorsport DNA of the line and moves toward a more astronomical reading of time. While it introduces a new visual and conceptual direction for the collection, it remains anchored in the brand’s broader history of technical exploration including its early presence in space in 1962.
Housed in a stainless steel case with polished and brushed finishes, the watch has a contemporary presence with its 39mm diameter, 12.16mm thickness, and 45.2mm lug-to-lug measurement. The front is protected by a sapphire crystal with double anti-reflective coating, ensuring clarity in all lighting conditions. On the reverse, a laser-engraved “space observatory” dome adds a subtle narrative element, reinforcing the watch’s thematic shift toward astronomical inspiration. The case is also rated for 100 meters of water resistance.
The Carrera Astronomer is offered in three distinct versions, each presenting a unique visual identity, a silver dial with black flange and monochrome moonphase disc, a silver and grey dial accented with turquoise Super-LumiNova, and a silver dial paired with rose gold-plated hands, indices, and flange.
At the core of each model is a silver sunray-brushed dial, centered around a rotating moonphase display positioned at 6 o’clock. This disc illustrates all seven lunar stages across the full 29.5-day cycle, advancing once per day at 1:00 AM via a recessed pointer that keeps time with the moon’s actual progression. Applied numerals and faceted hands either rhodium-plated or 18k 5N rose gold, depending on the model, are complemented by a printed seconds and minute track along the outer flange.
The watch is powered by TAG Heuer’s Calibre 7, an automatic movement operating at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz). It offers a power reserve of 56 hours, delivering stable performance for extended wear. While not an in-house calibre, Calibre 7 is a proven and reliable base movement, well-suited for the integration of the moonphase complication.
The Carrera Astronomer is available with a choice of bracelets and straps tailored to each model’s aesthetic. The stainless steel version is paired with a matching steel bracelet secured by a folding clasp, forming part of the brand’s permanent collection and priced at CHF 4,550 approximately equivalent to AED 21,000.
A second version, combining stainless steel and rose gold elements, is offered on a two-tone bracelet and limited to 500 pieces, priced at CHF 6,900 approximately equivalent to AED 31,500.
Completing the trio is a turquoise-accented model fitted with a grey leather strap and folding clasp, also limited to 500 pieces, with a retail price of CHF 4,350 approximately equivalent to AED 20,000.
