A Dial with a stunning artistic painting designed by Chinese artist Tong Ren
Hermès, the renowned French fashion house, initiated its venture into watchmaking as far back as 1912. However, it wasn't until 1978 that the brand unveiled its own creation, the Arceau, conceived by the talented artistic director Henri d’Origny. While it maintains a classic round shape, the Arceau adds a playful touch by embodying the equestrian essence synonymous with the Maison.
Hermès presents watches influenced by their iconic silk scarves, exemplified by the Slim d’Hermès Masan Masan pocket watch and the Arceau Costume de Fête designed by Warsaw-born artist Jan Bajtlik, drawing inspiration from Polish folk culture. Now, the brand releases the Arceau Mon Premier Galop with a dial design by the Chinese-born artist Tong Ren, showing an image of a colorful horse taking its first steps.
The round Arceau case, measuring 38mm in diameter, is crafted from polished 18k white gold. The bezel is adorned with 82 brilliant-cut diamonds, enhancing its sophistication. To ensure optimal visibility, the watch features an anti-reflective sapphire crystal covering both the dial and the caseback.
The enamel technique brings to life the serene light blue sky and sun, while the horse's form is crafted from a blend of silk thread and leather marquetry. Drawing inspiration from the texture of wicker baskets depicted on the shawl, the silk threads adorning the horse's body, along with the billowing blue clouds and sandy dunes, imbue the composition with depth and dynamism. Additionally, bursts of color are introduced through leather tesserae, expertly trimmed to a thickness of only 0.5mm, including accents of the brand's distinctive bright orange. Enhancing the scene further are two delicately hand-painted gold appliques portraying a butterfly and a mobile flower.
The timepiece operates using the Hermès H1912 caliber, crafted by Vaucher Manufacture. This automatic movement operates at a frequency of 28,800 vph (4Hz) and provides a power reserve of 50 hours. The watch comes with a Hermès Swift calfskin blue strap, and it's limited to 24 pieces with a price of EUR 85,000 which is equivalent to AED 340,000.
