A Playful Yellow Dial Inspired by a Chicken Egg Yolk
Few watchmakers possess the audacity to mix high horology with humor and fewer still manage to do so without compromising on craftsmanship. But H. Moser & Cie. has made this balancing act part of its identity. Through the Pioneer collection, the brand has consistently redefined what a modern luxury sports watch can look and feel like: technically refined, visually striking, and unafraid to challenge convention.
Now, in its latest creation, Moser injects a dose of playful surrealism into the Pioneer collection. The "Pioneer Centre Seconds Sunny-Side Up", drawing inspiration from the humble breakfast egg, this timepiece fuses culinary whimsy with haute horlogerie, inviting wearers to look at time and tradition through a brighter, more ironic lens.
Encased in stainless steel, the watch comes in a 40mm diameter and a 12mm thickness. The case combines polished and brushed finishes to enhance its dynamic presence, catching light at every angle without distracting from the bold dial. A screw-down crown ensures secure handling and reinforces the watch’s robust character, while sapphire crystals on both the front and back provide clarity and scratch resistance. With a water resistance rating of 120 metres, this timepiece is designed not just to amuse, but to endure.
The dial is undeniably its most arresting feature, a radiant yellow fumé that gleams like a sun-kissed yolk, fading to black around the edges in classic Moser fashion. Its vibrant sunburst pattern adds depth and energy. Applied faceted indices bring a touch of sharpness and precision, while discreet Super-LumiNova dots mark the hours, matching the subtle glow on the elegant leaf-shaped hours and minutes hands. A needle-shaped central seconds hand sweeps smoothly across the dial, tying together a composition that’s as whimsical as it is meticulously crafted.
The watch is powered by the HMC 201, a beautifully engineered in-house automatic movement. Beating at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour (3Hz), it delivers a 72-hour power reserve, ensuring consistent performance over extended periods. The movement is equipped with an original Straumann balance spring, a hallmark of Moser’s horological expertise and is finished in a sleek anthracite tone with gold engravings for a refined, modern aesthetic. Viewed through the sapphire caseback, the skeleton rotor adds a dynamic touch, revealing glimpses of the movement in action while maintaining the brand’s unmistakable attention to detail.
Completing the visual metaphor, the Pioneer Centre Seconds Sunny-Side Up comes fitted with a white rubber strap that mirrors the pristine clarity of stiff egg whites, a playful counterpart to the yolk-inspired dial. For those seeking a more classic look, the watch is also available with a stainless steel bracelet, offering a refined alternative to the sportier rubber strap. Priced at CHF 14,500 approximately AED 65,300 for the rubber strap.
