The Maison’s Smallest Timepiece Enters Official Production in White Gold
Greubel Forsey introduces the first official limited edition of its Nano Foudroyante, a groundbreaking timepiece originally launched last year as part of the Experimental Watch Technology (EWT) program. Presented during the “Mavericks of Time” exhibition in Abu Dhabi to mark the brand’s 20th anniversary, this latest edition now sheds its prototype and commemorative status to become a fully realized production model.
Limited to just 22 pieces, this new iteration is crafted entirely in white gold and represents a pivotal chapter in Greubel Forsey’s 10th Fundamental Invention. While the overall design remains faithful to the earlier prototype, the dial features subtle variations in color.
The case, now entirely in white gold (the prototype combined tantalum and white gold), measures 37.90 mm in diameter at the caseband and 38.30 mm at the bezel. It offers water resistance to 30 meters. The thickness is 10.49 mm, rising to 14.34 mm with the high-domed sapphire crystal. The caseband features straight-grained finishing, while the transparent caseback reveals the intricate movement within. Delicate engravings — “Nano Foudroyante” and “Greubel Forsey” — appear in polished relief against a hand-hammered backdrop.
The multi-level, rhodium-plated gold dial displays engraved and lacquered hour and minute markers, complemented by a small seconds sub-dial between six and seven o’clock and a chronograph minutes counter at nine. The large cutout between five and six o’clock reveals the tourbillon, while the foudroyante sub-dial dominates the center.
Mounted directly on the tourbillon cage above the balance wheel, it completes one rotation per minute along with the tourbillon, while its lightning seconds hand makes a full revolution every second. For this edition, the minute track is rendered in blue, with blued steel hands — except for the foudroyante hand, which stands out in striking red.
The vertical orientation of the foudroyante sub-dial is maintained by a differential gearing system, ensuring stability even as the tourbillon rotates. This complex assembly alone is composed of 142 parts.
Powering the Nano Foudroyante is a hand-wound mechanical movement, operating at 21,600 vibrations per hour (3 Hz) with a 24-hour power reserve when the chronograph is running. Continuing the spirit of the EWT prototype, the watch leverages nanomechanics to achieve extreme miniaturization at the nanojoule scale, dramatically reducing energy consumption and component size. Despite its 428 components (142 dedicated to the tourbillon cage), the movement measures just 31.60 mm in diameter, housed within Greubel Forsey’s most compact case to date at 37.90 mm.
Completing the design is a blue textured rubber strap secured by a white gold folding clasp. This exceptional timepiece is available in a strictly limited edition of 22 pieces, priced at CHF 465,000 (approximately AED 1,964,000).
