Classic Dive Watch Reimagined with Fresh Dial Updates in the Second Generation
In 2019, engineer Benedict Ong leveraged his expertise in design and manufacturing and combined it with his deep passion for the world of watches to establish the Mitch Mason brand. The independent brand, based in Singapore, continued to move forward with designs that blend classic aesthetics with modern manufacturing technology.
In late 2021, the company introduced its renowned Maelstrom collection in four striking colors. The first-generation models quickly sold out and were later discontinued.
Now, in 2025, Mitch Mason has updated its design, unveiling its latest release, the Maelstrom Tales of the Sea, a timepiece that retains the identity of classic dive watches while incorporating modern design elements and a distinctive dial.
Drawing inspiration from classic Super Compressor dive watches, the Maelstrom seamlessly blends vintage aesthetics with modern technology to enhance water resistance. Designed for the adventurous and resilient, this robust and versatile dive watch balances durability with refined style.
The 40mm stainless steel case is predominantly brushed, with polished accents along the sides for contrast. Drilled curved lugs add practicality, while the 12.5mm thickness wears slimmer than expected. A domed sapphire crystal tops the watch, and the screw-down stainless steel case back features an intricately 3D-stamped whale motif alongside the Mitch Mason branding. the case offers a 300 meters water resistance.
The upper crown at 2 o’clock operates the internal dive bezel, while the crown at 4 o’clock controls time-setting functions.
True to its name, "Maelstrom" evokes the image of a powerful ocean vortex. The dial design reflects this dynamic energy, with the teal hue capturing the ocean’s tranquility and vibrancy. Sunlit ocean wave motifs grace the surface, while a concentric snailed pattern enhances the minute track, elegantly framing the three-dimensional central dial for added depth.
Surrounding this is the internal dive bezel, coated with Super-LumiNova, with luminescent markings for the first 20 minutes. A date window at 6 o’clock seamlessly integrates into the design with its green background and white numerals.
Powering the Maelstrom is the renowned Miyota Caliber 9015, an automatic movement operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour (vph) with a 42-hour power reserve. A staple in premium microbrands, this movement offers a standard accuracy of -10/+30 seconds per day.
Completing the watch is a stainless steel bracelet that mirrors the case’s vertical brushing. Its H-link design features polished edges, and it secures with a folding clasp. The Maelstrom – Tales of the Sea is priced at $629 USD, approximately 2,310 AED.
